Privett hails McConachie’s service as mayor

An emotional goodbye to former Wrangell Mayor Don McConachie – and a formal announcement that the Borough would be accepting letters of interest to fill the position – were the two highlights of a special Borough Assembly meeting on Friday, Jan. 25.

Vice Mayor Bill Privett chaired the meeting and, after a unanimous vote to accept McConachie’s resignation was complete, he spoke of McConachie’s service and dedication while serving in the position.

“For the record, I would like to say that former Mayor McConachie did a wonderful job for us and it’s unfortunate the he had to resign under the conditions which he did,” Privett said. “His personal health, I think, is far more important than sitting up here and trying to do the city’s business. I take my hat off to him. He served on the council for many years and had been the former mayor and then got re-elected, so he has certainly done his duty and for that, I thank him.”

The Borough is accepting letters of interest until Feb. 12 at 5 p.m. from any qualified citizens who want to serve as the Mayor until October 2013.

Letters of interest should be submitted to Vice Mayor Privett at PO Box 531, Wrangell, AK 99929.
