Rosalee “Rosie” Ellen Massin, 92, passed away on January 17, 2013 in Wrangell.

Rosie was born in April 1920 in Fromberg, Mont. to Chester and Carrie Moore. The family moved to Wrangell in 1936 and lived and worked for a time at a cannery at Burnett Inlet. Rosie married her husband Martin on December 25, 1938 in Wrangell.

Rosie worked at several fish/shrimp/crab canneries in Wrangell over the years. She was also a night desk clerk at the Stikine Inn, where she sold the best turkey, roast beef and ham sandwiches. It was the sandwich sales that helped her buy a car, even though she didn’t have a license - that came later. After retiring from her job she traveled to Australia, through the Panama Canal, Mexico, and Hawaii.

She was a great cook and like poetry, classical music, and Bing Crosby.

Rosie was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Martin, her son Ben, sisters Rachel and Zona, brothers Bill and David, and parents Chester and Carrie.

She is survived by daughters Shelley Massin, Cocoa Massin both of Wrangell, and Ellen (Doug) Avanzino of Reno, Nev.; sons Bill Massin of Anchorage and Chester Massin of Wrangell; grandchildren Marty, Dena, Talea, Jesse, Taran, Mario, Tony, Rissa, Lilly and Celsee; 10 great grand children; sister Carol (Dick) Lubkuman of Anchorage, Alaska and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held January 31 at 1 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with a reception to follow at Father Jerry Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Legion Auxiliary or St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
