Obituary: Mildred Iversen Grant, 94

Millie Grant

Millie passed away peacefully in her sleep at the home of her daughter, Jeanie, in Big Lake, Alaska, on April 17, 2013.

A true Alaskan Pioneer, she was born in Wrangell, Alaska in June 8, 1918 to Peter and Ida Iversen. When she arrived she had step-brothers Harold, George and Weston, and step sister Hattie then came brother Bernard seven years later. She lived her entire life in Wrangell a town she loved.

She married her high school sweetheart, William (Bill) D. Grant in Wrangell. With Bill being the Fire Chief and raising four daughters, they also had many Wrangell businesses through the years including a filling station, a grocery store, the Brig Bar (named after Bill’s father, Brigham Young Grant), and finally after Bill’s passing Millie ran a clothing store on Front St. named Millie’s. Millie and her daughter Noel successfully ran the store for 40 plus years. Many people in Wrangell remember buying their first special clothing item from them. They were always there for the men in town when they were in need of a present for a special occasion, Millie and Noel would know just what they needed. Always full of life, Millie was happiest when everyone was together sharing food and laughter, remembering good times and making new ones.

Millie was very involved in Wrangell activities being a charter member in many organizations including Pioneers of Alaska Auxiliary, Wrangell Emblem Club and Wrangell Medical Auxiliary. Millie was always ready with a pie or special dish for anyone’s special occasion. Even in her 80s people would still call for one of her great pies and she was always ready with something wonderful.

She is once again with her loving husband Bill and their much loved daughter Noel, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by; her brother Bernard Iversen; her daughters, Aurore (Larry) Fickiesen, Bonnie (Randy) Grant and Jeanie (Dick) Pellett; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and many extended family members, all of whom loved and honored her.

A private family gathering was held at the home of her daughter, Aurore, on Camano Island, Wash. with the three daughters and many members of their families.

On May 19, 2013 there will be a special mass at 11:00 am at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church where Millie faithfully attended every Sunday, along with a celebration of her life at the Elks Club following the service, around 12:00.
