Bearing down with his chainsaw
Washington-based log sculptor Nick Bielby carved a pair of bears during Bearfest, working Friday and Saturday, Aug. 7 and 8, outside the Nolan Center. He chainsawed the bruins from a yellow cedar log, cut down on Wrangell Island and donated by Clay Hammer. The sculptures were burned and finished to add more detail, then donated to the Bearfest committee for placement at a location to be determined later. Bielby has been sculpting logs for 10 years and uses a chainsaw with various attachments for most of his work, with a large Dremel to add detail.
