“It is with both sadness and gratitude that we remember the life of Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Newman, who passed away peacefully on Nov. 1, 2025, in Wrangell, surrounded by those who loved her,” her family wrote.
Family and friends are warmly invited to celebrate Betty’s life on Sunday, June 28, at 1 p.m. at the last shelter in City Park. “Please join us for an afternoon of memories, stories, laughter and fellowship as we honor the life of a woman who was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.”
Betty was born in Wrangell to Theodore Cabot and Edna Wright (née Joseph) and spent her life in the community she proudly called home. She graduated from Wrangell High School and devoted more than 20 years of service to Tlingit and Haida Social Services, helping others and building lasting friendships before retiring.
Betty found happiness in the simple things. She loved curling up with historical romance novels set in Victorian England, watching old detective and police shows, enjoying a good movie, playing bingo and spending time with family and friends.
She had a warm heart, a wonderful sense of humor, and a deep love for the people in her life, her family wrote.
Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Edna Wright (née Joseph); father, Theodore Cabot; stepfather Vern Wright; brothers David E. Cabot, John J. Cabot and Marc Wright; sister Pacita Laws; and son Charles Lee Romane Jr.
She leaves behind a loving family including children Elizabeth L. Romane (Jess), David Newman, Darren Newman (Beth), Gerri Mesack (Renee); grandchildren Free, River and Stone Guggenbickler, Herschel Warner Jr. (Heather), David Warner, Sebastian Warner, Averie Mesack; great-grandchildren Lily, Grayson and Madelyn Warner; sisters Virginia Oliver (Richard), Jana Wright, Billie Wright, Teresa Leston and Jackie Tiller; brothers Ted R. Cabot, Wes Wright and Ted Cabot; many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones.
“Though she is gone from our sight, Betty’s love, kindness and the memories she created will remain in our hearts forever. Her family takes comfort in knowing that her legacy lives on in the community she loved, the people she helped and the family she cherished,” her family wrote.
