Comedy duo coming to Wrangell for Dec. 20 show at Nolan Center

“Comedy is not something we get very often,” said Nolan Center Director Jeanie Arnold, but a comedy duo from Anchorage is coming to town for one show Saturday, Dec. 20, at the center.

Rubber Ptarmigan is the promoter for the event, which will feature standup comics Ben Peterson and Jake Armstrong on stage.

Peterson describes their comedy as “observationist and witty,” traditional standup comedy, not slapstick, with a lot about Alaska mixed into their jokes.

Their promotional material says the two “are going off-road to bring their cargo of jokes to town.” They will perform in Ketchikan on Dec. 18 before coming to Wrangell.

“Most of it is non-political,” Peterson said in an interview Dec. 3. The humor is not for youngsters; it is geared to high school juniors and seniors and older, he said.

The duo also may interact with the audience during the comedy set, Peterson said.

The show, which will last about 90 minutes, will start at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance online at https://bit.ly/4pKqN2z, or $25 at the door the night of the performance.

Advance tickets are not available at the Nolan Center. Rubber Ptarmigan is renting the center for the event, Arnold said.

Peterson said he and Armstrong like to travel, so it just made sense to put together their love for travel and doing standup comedy and come to Southeast. They have never been to Wrangell, though they have performed in Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway.

“They reached out to us about a month ago,” Arnold said. “They really wanted to start branching out.”

Rubber Ptarmigan describes itself as a “group of stand-up standups who love comedy,” with three founders and other comics performing in different combinations in Alaska and Lower 48 shows since 2020.
