The long-standing tradition of a Friendsgiving meal will be served again this year at Evergreen Elementary School on Friday, Nov. 21. “It is a way of sharing Thanksgiving at the school, to give thanks and enjoy each other’s company,” said Kendra McDougall, administrative assistant at the school.
Each student is allowed to invite one adult to share a luncheon feast with them in the school gym, which will be specially decorated, with tables set by the second-grade class.
To accommodate all the students and their guests, lunch will be served in two shifts. The Friendsgiving lunch for pre-K through second grade will be from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m., while the festivities for third through fifth grades will be from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The meal is a combination of potlatch-style offerings, supplemented by contributions from Wrangell businesses. Each class has a suggested category for bringing to the table: appetizers, a side dish or a dessert to create balance and variety.
The event, which has been held as long as staff and faculty can remember, is sponsored by the Parent Teacher Community Committee. McDougall emphasized it’s an opportunity for the community at large to get involved with this and other school functions.
“We are always looking for more volunteers. For this event, we need volunteers to help organize and serve the food.” There are no cooking or baking facilities at the school, so contributions need to be ready to serve, and preferably in a disposable dish.
If you are interested in volunteering or offering a dish to share, call the school office at 907-874-2321.
