It was a poor decision to remove toddler play area from City Park

I am writing this because of the decision to remove the toddler play area at City Park, a decision I think was reached through a lack of knowledge or indifference.

Major health, education and government organizations universally endorse outdoor play as a critical requirement for a toddler’s development. Here are some of the benefits according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics, U.S. Head Start:

It reduces stress; lowers obesity; improves brain function; strengthens the immune system; significantly reduces illness; natural light triggers dopamine release in the retina, promoting eye development; focusing on faraway objects that exercises the eyes; it enhances impulse control; reduces aggression; accelerates gross motor development and builds core strength; better balance; better sleep; happier moods; more focus; higher confidence; creative thinking; curiosity; social skills and alertness.

If the decision makers were aware of these benefits and removed the playground anyway it constitutes indifference and lack of empathy.

Trailer courts, apartments and many homes don’t have suitable play areas and City Park had the only designated, fenced playground for toddlers on the island — and its gone.

I and everyone I have spoken with were not aware of an opportunity to air our opinions or suggestions. I think what happened was wrong and needs to be addressed.
