The Wrangell Lady Wolves are dominating the basketball court with a 4-0 streak to start the season after beating the Petersburg Vikings twice over homecoming weekend.
The only other undefeated team in their division is the Metlakatla Miss Chiefs — and Wrangell will travel to Metlakatla’s home gym for games Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23-24.
There was never a lack of hustle when the Lady Wolves were on the court, from jump balls to steals to fouls, it seemed everyone was everywhere in the games against Petersburg on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 16-17.
Wrangell came out strong with Christina Johnson hitting a signature three-pointer, Hailey Cook a jump shot and Jenna Eastaugh a free throw to start Friday’s game. However, Petersburg came prepared and scored eight points in return (as well as a basket by Wrangell scored on the wrong hoop).
Wrangell was down 6-10 at the start of the second quarter, and the Lady Wolves had to fight from behind — a feeling they’re not used to.
They quickly regained their footing as Alana Harrison scored a basket to pump up the team, followed by another one of Johnson’s threes. Eastaugh also had an amazing quarter with nine points, rounding out the 10 she earned that night. Cook drained a three-pointer at the end of the half to bring Wrangell to a 23-15 lead over the Vikings.
Alexis Easterly set the tone for the second half with a pull-up jumper, getting herself on the board for the first time that night. Following was a jump shot from Johnson, another two points from Easterly, and another three-pointer from Cook.
In the final quarter of the match, Harrison and Easterly went back and forth scoring points for the Wolves, earning a collective 10 points to finish the night with Wrangell’s 42-28 victory over the Petersburg Vikings.
Saturday night, the Lady Wolves pushed their energy from the previous night into the beginning of the second game, quickly earning a 14-5 lead over the Vikings with six points from Easterly, three from Eastaugh, the same from Cook and two from Harrison.
The second quarter was led with some amazing footwork in the paint from senior Shailyn Nelson, collecting eight points on the night.
Easterly too kept the momentum with five points from a layup and an “one and one,” along with a three from Cook and two points each from Johnson and Harrison.
The score was 47-31 at the end of the night, with Easterly scoring a team high of 17 points.
Despite Petersburg’s efforts at stealing the ball and putting on a full court press, even triple teaming, the Wolves could not be stopped in their second weekend sweep of the young season.
