The Lady Wolves secured another pair of strong victories just over halfway through the season, building their conference record to six wins and four losses. The long trip to Haines produced victories Friday, Feb. 6, by a score of 48-18, and a 60-19 win on Saturday, Feb. 7.

The first minutes of the game on Friday night started with a three-pointer from Haines’ Brylea Swaner, however those were the only points scored by the team that quarter. As for Wrangell, everyone was getting their hands on the ball as Christina Johnson, AJ Roundtree, Alana Harrison, Shailyn Nelson and Jenna Eastaugh all scored 2 points each, as well as a three-pointer from Alexis Easterly.

The Wolves had the same success in the second quarter and brought their total to 29 points at the half. Though Haines had gained some traction, they were at just 14 points at the break.

Wrangell responded and did not let the Glacier Bears earn a single point in the third quarter, playing tough defense and putting on a full-court press. They weren’t lacking in offense either, with points from Harrison, Johnson, Easterly and Nelson taking the lead to 42-14.

The Wolves kept pushing in the final quarter, and with two layups from Harrison and a fast break from Eastaugh they finished with their fifth win of the season, 48-18.

Harrison scored 13, Johnson 11, Alexis Easterly had 8, with 6 each from Nelson and Eastaugh, and 4 from Roundtree.

Saturday night was much of the same for the Lady Wolves, who took an early lead with 5 points from Easterly, 2 each from Nelson, Harrison and Roundtree, and a free throw from Johnson in the first quarter.

Going into the second quarter, it looked a little wobbly when Wrangell’s senior captain Johnson had to sit out after getting into foul trouble, but Harrison picked up the slack and drained 11 points. Other baskets were scored by Eastaugh and Selah Purviance, bringing the score to 30-11 at halftime.

The Wolves and Glacier Bears went back and forth in scoring during the third quarter, but Haines was unable to make a dent in Wrangell’s lead and the Wolves were ahead 39-17 going into the final minutes of play.

The red jerseys were on fire in the fourth quarter, and with 10 points from Eastaugh, 4 from Harrison, 2 each from Johnson and Nelson, and 1 from Roundtree, the Wolves’ notched their sixth victory of the season.

Their 60-19 win was led by a season high of 21 points from Harrison, followed by 12 from Eastaugh, 9 from Easterly, 5 each from Johnson and Roundtree, and 4 from Nelson and Purviance.

The Lady Wolves will head to Hoonah this week to participate in a tournament with the Angoon Eagles, Shaktoolik Wolverines and Hoonah Braves on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 12-13, in Hoonah. These games will not count for their conference record.

The Southeast regional tournament is March 5-7 in Juneau.
