A Wrangell man remained in custody as of Monday, Jan. 19, after a state grand jury indicted him on Jan. 8 for drug crimes. Steven Ray Marshall, 66, faces two felony charges for misconduct involving a controlled substance.
Police Chief Gene Meek said Marshall was arrested with a large amount of methamphetamine. Investigators found him with a package with 478.8 grams of the drug, about one pound.
The street value of the drugs is estimated at $90,000, according to the Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs Task Force, which worked on the investigation.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the case began with a tip about drugs in the mail. Postal workers found a suspicious package addressed to Marshall that had a fake return address. Officers then got a search warrant.
The affidavit states that police watched Marshall pick up the package from the Wrangell post office on Dec. 29. He took it to his home. Officers entered the house a short time later and found the package was already open.
Marshall reportedly told officers he did not know anything about the delivery.
A judge set Marshall’s bond at $10,000. He must also sign a $5,000 agreement and will lose that money if he breaks court rules, according to Meek. If he does post bond, he will be under house arrest and would also need to wear an electronic monitor and take drug tests.
In a court appearance on Jan. 13, Marshall asked for a reduced bond; the judge said no. Marshall has a past criminal record involving assault.
The Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions will handle the case. According to Meek, that office is now gathering evidence from the district attorney.
