Three cruise lines — the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Virgin Voyages and MSC Cruises — will dock in Ketchikan this summer for the first time, and another line will return after an extended leave.

Figures from the Ketchikan Visitors Bureau show that as many as 1.64 million tourists could cruise into town this summer, if all of the ships run at full capacity.

Ritz-Carlton’s Luminara will stop 11 times in Ketchikan, bringing nearly 5,000 passengers in total. Virgin Voyages could bring in approximately 44,000 tourists over the course of the summer as its Brilliant Lady stops in Ketchikan 16 times.

MSC’s Poesia will bring in the greatest passenger load of the three new ships. With a capacity of 2,550 people per voyage, the vessel could carry up to 51,000 passengers in its 20 stops in Ketchikan.

Azamara will dock its Pursuit cruise ship in Ketchikan again after several years of absence. With an estimated 702 passengers on each of 10 visits, the cruise company, which advertises “intimate cruises, fewer guests,” could bring in 7,000 people to Ketchikan.

Last year, 1.5 million tourists flocked to the First City on cruise ships. With 725 total stops between 58 vessels, this summer cruise season will see the greatest number of stops since at least 2009.

To accommodate the growing number of cruise visitors, there are ongoing conversations to find a solution to the bathroom shortage at Creek Street, a popular tourist destination downtown.
