Nominations for four open seats on the eight-member Wrangell Cooperative Association tribal council are due by 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16.
The election will be held Feb. 2 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the WCA Cultural Center on Front Street.
Candidates for the council must be a member of WCA and on the official voting list, and must live in Wrangell. The minimum age to serve is 18.
WCA has close to 900 members, with about half living in town.
The nomination form is available at the WCA office at 1002 Zimovia Highway or call 907-874-4304 for more information.
Council members whose terms expire this year are President Edward Rilatos, Vice President Frank Churchill Jr., Tom Gillen Sr. and Richard Oliver.
The terms are for two years each.
The other four council members — who were elected last year — are Sandy Churchill, Luella Knapp, Ken Hoyt and Tim Gillen.
The election for the fourth seat last year ended in a tie between Gillen and Jennifer Davies, at 48 votes each. Under WCA rules, a coin toss determined the winner. Davies called “heads” but the coin landed on “tails.”
“This just goes to show that every single vote counts,” she said last year.
Eligible Natives who are not enrolled in WCA or need to change their name on the voter roll have until 4 p.m. Jan. 23 to submit their paperwork. Anyone with questions can call WCA at 907-874-4304 or stop by the office at 1002 Zimovia Highway.
