One month left in fishing derby; special prizes this weekend

It’s another “hidden-weight” weekend for the Wrangell fishing derby.

The derby ticket holders who catch a coho and halibut that comes closest to the secret weight — which will be generated by a computer program and revealed only after the weekend — will each win a $300 cash prize.

The chamber of commerce, which runs the derby, picked this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8 and 9, to coincide with Bearfest, Wrangell’s annual celebration of all things bear.

This weekend’s hidden-weight contest is the third during this year’s salmon and halibut derby; the last special will be on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5-7.

In addition to the four weekends of hidden-weight prizes, the derby will award a $1,000 cash prize each for the largest entry of halibut, king salmon and coho salmon over the three-month fishing contest.

As of July 30, the leaders were:

King salmon: Diana Nore-Ellison, 27.9 pounds; Jody Clark, 27.7; and Marlin Benedict, 23.2.

Halibut: Bristol Wagner, of Cherry Valley, California, 133.6 pounds; Jeff Murtaugh, of Arizona, 111.2; and Charlie Wagner, also of Cherry Valley, 87.4.

There was only one coho entry as of July 30 — Diana Nore-Ellision, with a 6.7-pound catch — but coho runs in the area usually peak around mid-August.

Wrangell-area entries in the king derby have been weak in recent years, with just eight kings entered in 2025, 27 in 2024 and 13 in 2023.

More than 110 derby tickets were sold as of last week, according to the chamber.

Derby tickets, at $35 each, are available at Sentry Hardware, the Stikine Inn, Alaska Vistas, Angerman’s, TK’s Mini Mart and the chamber office in the Nolan Center.

The weekday weigh-in station for derby entries is at Peninsula Seafoods at the Marine Service Center.

Boaters who bring in catches evenings and weekends can go to a weigh-in station at Reliance Harbor, across from the harbormaster’s office, or check the chamber’s Facebook page for any after-hours phone number.
