Plant swap and seed potato sale grows in its third year

The third annual plant swap and seed potato sale will sprout from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, in a yard on St. Michaels Street, near the bottom of the hill.

“It’s kind of been building each year,” said Mya DeLong, one of the organizers.

Sponsored by the Wrangell Community Garden and Wrangell Cooperative Association, the event provides gardeners with an opportunity to swap out their excess plants and starters for something they may want to add to their greenery.

“You can swap your Brussels sprouts for celery,” DeLong said, or any other plant that anyone wants to trade.

The swap can include outdoor plants, indoor plants, edibles or greenery. “What anybody has a surplus of.” People also can bring their starter plants to sell, DeLong said.

The only limitations are no invasive plants; clean, bug-free soil; labels and care tags are appreciated.

Setup starts at 8 a.m.

The Saturday morning event also will feature a seed potato sale.

WCA purchased almost 150 pounds of seed potatoes from a Palmer grower, said Kim Wickman, the WCA Tl’átḵ | Earth Branch manager. The potatoes are certified free of any diseases.

There will be 50 pounds of Yellow Finn potatoes, 50 pounds of Satina spuds and 25 pounds of Purple Viking, Wickman said. The potatoes will sell at $5 per pound, which covers WCA’s cost and shipping.

In addition, WCA will distribute 10 pounds of Haida potatoes and 10 pounds of Tlingit potatoes, she said. The grower “was able to obtain some heirloom breeds.”

The event will be on the corner of Front and St. Michaels streets, below Cheri Wickman’s house.
