A total rebuild of St. Michaels Street, between Church and Front streets, will likely begin in early August, with a projected substantial completion date of Oct. 30.
The borough assembly awarded a $1,248,182 contract to Marble Island, of Ketchikan, on June 24. The company was the lowest of four bidders.
The borough is currently working to finalize the contract, performance and payment bonds and insurance certificates. Once these are in place, the borough will issue a notice to proceed to the contractor, said Capital Projects Director Amber Al-Haddad.
“They’re going to need to remove the surface pavement — including the sidewalk — and the existing lines that run through that area,” Al-Haddad explained. “That would be water, sewer and storm lines, which would be immediately replaced. After all of that, the roadbed will be turned with a final grade and resurfaced with new (concrete) pavement.”
The 300-foot-long stretch of St. Michaels has been plagued by numerous water line breaks over the years, resulting in temporary patches and broken pavement.
Though the street will be closed to traffic during the rebuild, temporary water and sewer lines will be set in place for residents who get their service from lines buried in St. Michaels.
