A state agency is accepting bids on a 2.85-acre lot on the Back Channel, about six miles south of the end of the airport runway, as part of its annual statewide fall land sale.
The Wrangell East parcel requires a minimum bid of $31,000 in the auction, with bids due Nov 16 and winners announced Nov. 18.
There are no utilities and no road access to the property.
The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, which manages about a million acres across the state, sells or leases the property to generate revenue to pay for programs and grants “to improve the lives of Alaskans experiencing behavioral health conditions and intellectual and developmental disabilities.”
The list of programs includes helping Alaskans experiencing mental illness, addiction, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, and traumatic brain injuries.
The trust’s land office fall sale also includes a 12.82-acre parcel at Meyers Chuck, about 50 air miles south of Wrangell, with a minimum bid of $104,500. Meyers Chuck is part of the Wrangell borough.
More information on the land office, the fall sale and the bidding process is available online at alaskamentalhealthtrust.org; just click on the Trust Land Office tab at the top of the page.
The fall sale also includes additional Southeast parcels on Prince of Wales Island, and in Ketchikan and Gustavus.
The Wrangell East lot in the fall auction is not the only parcel of trust land for sale on the island; eight other lots in the same area that did not sell in past auctions are available in the agency’s over-the-counter sale program. Those eight range from $20,500 to $79,000, from about 2.5 acres to almost 5 acres each.
The over-the-counter parcels also include a 4.377-acre lot at Thoms Place, on the west side of Wrangell Island, listed at $24,500, accessible only by boat.
And five lots, covering a combined 8.24 acres on Zimovia Highway, south of the former 6-Mile Mill site, are available for a single purchase in the over-the-counter program at $260,000.
