Although the pool is closed for maintenance and many other recreational programs are on summer break, kids still have options to keep busy and active before school starts on Aug. 21.
In addition to the annual summer reading program, the Irene Ingle Public Library offers Kids Club on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 4 p.m. The library also hosts Reading with a Ranger on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Contact the library at 907-874-3535 for more information.
Parks and Recreation still has openings in its Forest Explorers program for 7- to 12-year-old youth. It meets on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to noon until Aug. 5. Participants meet at Volunteer Park. The explorations are led by Kim Wickman from IGAP/WCA. There is a $50 registration fee; go to wrangellak.myrec.com to sign up.
There are roller skating opportunities at TouchPoint Alaska Ministries (212 Bennett St). Skater Tots sessions are Tuesday and Thursday 10:30 a.m. to noon (free), and Saturday open skate 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. ($5 per person). Check their Facebook page for any schedule changes.
The WCA is offering a free beadwork class at the Nolan Center July 7-11, with instructor Sandy Churchill. Participants can choose between three daily sessions: 9 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3 p.m., and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
There are also a number of faith-based activities available this summer.
The Wrangell Ministerial Association will offer Wonder Junction: The Life of Jesus Vacation Bible School July 7-11, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. There is no participation fee. Contact Capt. Isabella Green at The Salvation Army 907-874-3753 for additional information.
Bible Baptist Church (538 Church St.) is hosting a summer Bible club for kids, called Special People Learning About the Savior (SPLATS) every Thursday (except July 3) from 3:30 to 5 p.m. This free gathering is open to youth 5 to 18 years old and includes Bible stories, games, snacks, songs, crafts and fun. Harbor Light Assembly of God Church (627 Zimovia Highway) holds a Friday night youth gathering from 7 to 10 p.m. for sixth through 12th grade students. Contact the office at 907-874-2244 for more information.
Unstructured activities can also be a part of summer fun. Some possibilities include a litter cleanup of one block downtown, bird watching, marble races, learning to juggle, rock painting, sidewalk chalk art, a scavenger hunt or a bubble gum bubble-blowing contest. Whether it’s structured or unstructured, summertime is a time for imagination, play and fun.
