Due to the steady growth of population which has been occasioned by the extended opportunities offered by Wrangell during the past two years, a real building boom has begun. In all, 41 houses have been completed or construction work started during the year. In addition to the 41 residences, 10 new buildings have been erected or are under construction for business or commercial purposes. The building program also includes a new, modern $50,000 school plant to take the place of the inadequate and antiquated buildings now in use.

The city council and the Wrangell Health Council are holding a joint meeting Wednesday evening, April 23, during Cleanup week. The purpose is to discuss plans for an all-out campaign for rat control, the most thorough cleanup drive we’ve ever had, and to discuss what might be done about the sewer situation within the financial and other means of Wrangell.

The status of Mt. Dewey as a potential recreational site, is one of the items under consideration by the newly appointed Wrangell Parks, Recreation and Youth Board. Research is underway to determine who is the owner of record of the land, which officially is designated as part of a federal reserve, said Alice Hunt, board chairman.

Judy Bakeberg, Wrangell representative to the Inter-Island Ferry Authority, updated the city council on Tuesday on the current status of the IFA. She reported that the authority’s second vessel is not in the State Transportation Improvement Plan for funding until fiscal year 2004. “Not as soon as we hoped,” she said, adding, “We will lose out on the $2 million savings we hoped to make by completing the second vessel right away.”
