Walter Campen was in Wrangell yesterday from his ranch at Olive Cove on Etolin Island. He brought two black wolf pelts with him. The wolves were both females and measured seven feet in length. Mr. Campen killed one Sunday morning and the other Monday evening. He killed them both from his cabin using a rifle at 400 yards. Each of the wolves was found to have devoured a young fawn shortly before being killed. Mr. Campen says that on Saturday morning he observed four does on the beach and all were without fawns.

If you catch any big trout this weekend, take them to the Zimovia Lockers to be weighed and entered in the Stikine Sportsmens Association trout derby. Take a quarter with every fish you enter, as there is a derby entry fee. The committee hopes to have a high-powered rifle for first prize. Awards will be made in September, in time for hunting season.

The police department is pioneering a new phone-radio communications system unique to any law enforcement agency in the country, said Chief William Klein. The system, funded mainly by a federal Criminal Justice Planning Agency grant, allows a police officer on patrol to dial any phone number within 18 miles of the police station, using a handheld pack that includes a phone dial. The cost of the system was $17,000; the city provided $800.

The quest for The Big One is over. The 2001 king salmon derby ended Sunday at 9 p.m. with Mark Turner retaining the top slot in the contest – a place he held with his 44.4-pound winner since the second week of the derby. Second place went to Churchill Brown II, also with a 44.4-pound fish caught May 24, one day after Turner’s. Third place was a 44.1-pounder caught by Ed Kuntz. All three of the top fish were caught at Babbler, as were a large number of the fish caught during the month-long derby. The fishing grounds were packed with boats this year and it comes as no surprise that 464 king salmon were entered in the competition. Total derby tickets sold were 932.
