The Wrangell Wolves headed into their final matchups of the season against the Petersburg Vikings with a two-game winning streak, looking to score their first win against the Vikings this season after going 0-2 against them earlier in the year.
The weekend games did not go Wrangell’s way.
On Friday night, Feb. 27, the Wolves fell behind the Vikings early, trailing 14-7 after the first quarter. In the second, the Vikings would go on a 12-5 run to take a 26-12 lead at halftime.
The Wolves were having difficulties keeping the Vikings out of the paint, with the Vikings scoring all of their points in the first half inside the arc.
In the second half, the Vikings dominated the Wolves, outscoring Wrangell 27-8 in the second half.
The Vikings won the game going away by a score of 53-20. One of the biggest advantages for the Vikings was their ability to get to the free throw line. In the game, the Vikings sank 11 of 12 from the line and the Wolves were only 3 for 9.
The Wolves hoped to rebound Saturday night with a better performance.
The Wolves were down 9-5 against the Vikings at the end of the first quarter and then in the second quarter Wrangell’s Jackson Powers got hot, weaving his way into the paint with his jump shot and finishing ability. Powers had six points in the second quarter but the Wolves still trailed the Vikings 20-15 at halftime.
After a pair of Vikings three pointers, the Wolves had to take a timeout, now trailing 28-18 midway through the third.
Powers and Aadyn Gillen did their best to keep the Wolves within striking distance, scoring three and four points, respectively, but the Wolves found themselves trailing 35-27 at the end of the third.
The Vikings kept pushing and widened their lead to 43-29 with about four minutes left in the game. The Viking’s defense was stifling as the Wolves were held to only four points. Gillen was the only Wolves to score a basket in the fourth. Ben Houser and Lucas Stearns each had a point from the free throw line.
The final score was 50-31, Petersburg.
After losing the two games to Petersburg, the Wrangell boys ended the season at 5-14 overall and 4-12 in conference.
The teams head next to Juneau for the Southeast regional championships this week.
