Wrangell’s Lady Wolves are heading into regionals as the only undefeated team in Southeast with a conference record of 14-0.

The South Seeding Tournament was held in Craig over the past weekend to round out the placements of each volleyball team for the showdown at Southeast regionals Nov. 20-22 in Skagway.

Wrangell dominated every team at the seeding tournament and will be first seed at the regional championships, followed by Petersburg and Metlakatla as second and third seeds.

The goal the team set for their trip to Craig wasn’t necessarily to win, but they wanted to play the best volleyball they could and see improvement on the court.

Thursday morning, Nov. 6, marked the start of play with a matchup of Wrangell versus Haines, the Wolves earning their first win of the tournament with scores of 25-17 and 25-23.

They had a bit of a break before facing their second opponent, the Hoonah Braves, and securing their second victory. Players and spectators were on edge as the points got closer and closer, ending with Wrangell winning the first set 25-22 and 28-26 in the second.

Concluding Thursday night was the rivalry matchup of the Petersburg Vikings versus Wrangell. The Lady Wolves were victorious 25-19 and 25-22, with Alana Harrison getting 10 kills, Natalia Ashton six aces and Sophia Martinsen nine digs over the two games.

Next up was Metlakatla on Friday, the only Southeast 2A team to defeat the Wolves in the 2024 season. Wrangell put a quick stop to a Metlakatla repeat win this year, however, letting them score only 14 points in the first set and 12 in the second. Harrison had a total of 15 kills.

The Wolves defeated both Skagway and Klawock soon after, by scores of 25-16 and 25-22, followed by 25-12 and 25-9, respectively.

The final matchup for the Wolves was a bit intense as it was Craig’s Friday night home game Nov. 7, but Wrangell pulled through with 25-14 and 25-23 victories. Harrison had another amazing set of games with 12 kills, while Paige Hoyt had four aces and Alexis Easterly, Harrison and AJ Roundtree each had one block.

Setter Christina Johnson was a huge help in the wins, with six digs and 20 assists.

“Even when we faced some disappointing things, we still powered through and never doubted ourselves,” said head coach Shelley Powers.

The Southeast regional championship meet is next on the team’s agenda, where they hope to take first place and move on to the state tournament. If they succeed at Southeast, it will be the fourth year in a row the Lady Wolves have won the regional title.

The state Division 2A tournament is Dec. 4-6 at Dimond High School in Anchorage. The top two teams from Southeast will head to state.
