WCA holds seed potato sale and plant swap Saturday

Gardeners can get a start on the season at the fourth annual community seed potato sale and plant swap, sponsored by WCA Earth Branch.

The event for experienced green thumbs and people who want to try out their gardening thumbs is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at the community garden, just past Heritage Harbor.

WCA will have 75 pounds of seed potatoes to sell at $5 a pound, said Kim Wickman, of the Earth Branch program. The cost covers WCA’s expenses of buying and shipping the potatoes to town.

They will have traditional russet potatoes, along with caribe and fiesta. Caribe is described as a high-yielding, early-season variety with purple skin and snow-white flesh. Fiesta is a fingerling potato variety, also with a deep purple skin but with a purple flesh too.

For those looking for something more to add to their home garden than just potatoes, the event will include a plant swap. In addition, people with extra starters can bring their young greenery to the event to sell, Wickman said.

The swap and plant sale is open both for vegetables and flowering plants.

People bringing in starters to swap or sell are asked to make sure the soil in their planters is clean and free of bugs. Labels are helpful.
