Rea evaluation sets goals for 2013

After a spirited public comment section of the Wrangell Medical Center Board of Directors special meeting on May 31 the board retired into executive session to discuss CEO Noel Rea’s annual personnel review.

While the review and discussion of his performance are confidential personnel matters, Rea said afterward that it was a productive session – and gave him goals to work toward in the coming year.

“This was, by no means, a perfect review,” Rea said. “But it was a very thorough evaluation. It was good and I am pleased with it because it was very fair. I have some things to work on.”

Rea’s performance was measured using an evaluation tool written by Dr. James Orlikoff and Mary K. Totten, and gave him a tally of 4.467 points out of a possible total of 5 points.

The tool utilized an assessment and reward goal for CEO performance, linked Rea’s performance to WMC’s goals, and dealt with strengthening relations between Rea and the board.

Of the quantifiable measurements in the tool, Rea was judged on leadership and managerial qualities, personal qualities, knowledge and skills, and board, medical staff and community relations.

According to Rea, the board did not give him the easy “A” – but worked with him constructively to look ahead to the next year at WMC.

“There are definitely some things I need to improve on,” Rea said. “I would say they were reasonably critical and asked hard-hitting questions. We’re going to work on the details about how we get there from here.”

Specifically, Rea spoke about a few things he will be working over the next 12 months.

“We are going to continue to work on staff development issues, which includes me,” Rea said. “We’re also going to have a lot of interaction with the six other CEOs across Southeast Alaska, conduct leadership training, and work to bring more services to the region.”

The evaluation team was a multi-faceted effort including WMC department heads and the board, as well as Borough Manager Tim Rooney, pastor Kem Haggard, Wrangell’s SEARHC representative Lovey Brock, and Dr. Prysunka.

Dr. Marv Erisman, a California-based expert in organizational communication, conducted the interviews with evaluation team members and wrote the report the board relied upon to arrive at Rea’s overall rating.
