School year about wrapped up

Second grader Roma Allen was recognized for her writing at Monday's meeting of the Wrangell Public School Board. A teacher and counselor helped Allen publish her poem "We Are Diamonds" in this year's edition of the Young Poets Collection, which puts out the work of primarily elementary school students. In recognition of this accomplishment, the young poet was presented with a framed copy of her verse, appropriately decorated with faux diamonds. "We thought it suited the poem," remarked Deidre Jenson, principal of Evergreen Elementary School.

With its last meeting of the academic year, the Wrangell Public School Board looked back on its progress as measured against its 2015-16 strategic plan goals.

The plan started to develop in February 2015, with faculty and members of the community collaborating on ways to improve students' experience in four primary areas: academic achievement, technical education, safety and facilities improvements, and technology.

"Everyone had a hand in the final product," school superintendent Patrick Mayer said.
