Press release: City announces response to governor's emergency alert

November 12, 2020

Late this morning Governor Dunleavy issued a statewide Emergency Alert imploring Alaskans to take a number of different actions related to COVID-19 mitigation to help stop the surge in cases and reduce stress on healthcare capacity. Those actions include:

· Working remotely if possible

· Pre-order supplies, goods and food for pick-up or carry-out

· Stay six (6) feet apart at all times from non-household members

· Wear a mask at all times in public if six feet of separation is not possible

· Consider celebrating Thanksgiving and other holiday gatherings differently.

In response to the Governor’s alert, effective at 2:00p.m. today (November 12, 2020), all City & Borough of Wrangell facilities and offices will be closed to the public. Borough staff remain working and are available to assist with any needs. The Public Safety Building remains open only for access to Police Dispatch. The Solid Waste Transfer Station (Dump) remains open for trash disposal. The closure will remain in place until December 7, 2020, at which time it will be reevaluated.

The public should feel free to contact Borough staff by phone at the following numbers:

The Assembly is holding an Emergency meeting at 4:00p.m. today to discuss the possibility of community measures in response to the Governor’s Alert. Please visit the Borough’s webpage at http://www.wrangell.com for meeting information.

The City & Borough of Wrangell understands these closures will impact traditional and valued community events and gatherings. Though disappointing, the health of our community comes first.

As Wrangell always does, we will come together as a community to get through this. Please reach out to those who you know may need extra support to offer assistance. Be safe Wrangell.
