WMC tournament brings out 60 players

The Wrangell Medical Center Foundation held their 6th Annual Brian Gilbert Memorial Golf Tournament last weekend at Muskeg Meadows – under better weather than previous tournaments – and saw a total of 60 players come out over the two-day event.

On Friday afternoon, a round of casual golf was played, with a 9-hole best-ball scramble as the format. First place in the event went to the team of Greg Scheff, Ed Rilatos, Dave Doyon and Matt Jurak with a net score of 18, while Keene and Faye Kohrt, Eric Kading and Wayne Harding nailed down 2nd place with a final tally of 19.

The straightest drive went to Wayne Ellis at 7-feet, 4 inches, and Wayne Harding took the closest to the pin award at 27-feet, 5 inches.

On Saturday morning the 9-hole scramble for the actual tournament was held, with 43 players taking part.

First place went to the team of Shelly Wright, Bryce Dohlstrom, Tim Rooney and Lori Blood with a net score of 13. Second place went to the team of Scheff, Rilatos, Rafael Nunez and Andrew Johannes at 17, while the quartet of Doyon, Kendall Sawa, Bob Urata, Penny Pederson took 3rd place, also with net score 17. Fourth place – with another score of 17 – was Grover Mathis, Wayne and Toot Harding, and Rupert Henry. Fifth place went to Tyman Comstock, Jeb Marrow, Tyler Gunn and Brett Woodbury with a tally of 19.

Scorekeeper Bill Messmer used the best team score on fairway No. 1 as the tiebreaker; however, all the tied teams ended that hole with 4 strokes. The next handicap hole Messmer used was fairway No. 2. That hole ended tied again with 4 strokes each. The next hole, No. 3, finally nailed the order of the top-five teams.

The “Rear Raven” award went to the only three-person team, which consisted of Terry Shilts, Jessica Barrett and George Benson with a net score of 25.

The evening of Saturday’s events closed with a dinner and auction at the Nolan Center.

The Foundation’s cancer care allocation permits the group to donate up to $1,000 per patient to send those stricken with the disease off Wrangell Island for treatment and handles travel expenses.

The amount raised during the tournament to support the Foundation was not available by press time.

Muskeg Meadows’ next tournament will be this weekend as they hold the City Market and Sentry Hardware tournament. Check-in is scheduled for 9 a.m., with play to begin at 10 a.m.
