Wrangell celebrates Alaska Day

Local residents ran, heard speakers, and dined on soup to celebrate Alaska Day Friday and Saturday.

The state holiday, observed Oct. 18 every year, commemorates the day Russian officials signed the territory of Alaska over to American officials at Sitka in 1867. The day features prominent displays of the Alaska state flag, and in at least one case a big fur hat.

The hat in question belonged to Bruce Jamieson, who won the Alaska costume competition at the Alaska Day run Saturday, and the accompanying cash prize.

The run is one of a series of runs organized by a cadre of local runners known for colorful antics, including a literal color run June 30.

The Alaska Day event featured treats and a little buddy run for children.

The group plans a “’Stache Dash,” featuring fake mustaches for Nov. 2

The run raised $370 for the Cancer Care Fund through the Wrangell Medical Center said Lucy Robinson, who helped organize the run in association with the Southeast Beasts running group.

The chief other event for the day itself was the sixth annual senior luncheon at Island of Faith Lutheran church. Third and fourth grade students from Evergreen Elementary performed songs about Wrangell and the Alaskan state flag. Guest speaker and borough manager candidate Christie Jamieson delivered a speech about the history of Wrangell.
