Nellie Margaret Gunderson

Nellie Margaret Gunderson (Torgramsen) passed away in Portland, Oregon, on September 30, 2015.  She was born July 25, 1932, in Wrangell, on Shakes Island, to Gunnar and Margaret Gunderson. Nellie was the granddaughter of Chief Shakes VI.

Her family and friends knew her as an ornery jokester.  She had a great personality and loved to give folks a hard time-that's how you knew she was having a good day.  She had a green thumb and used to work for hours on end in her yard and garden. She loved playing bingo at the American Legion with her friends.

Nellie enjoyed flowers, trees, and wildlife, which explained her love of taking long car rides.  Short trips to the post office or grocery store were often followed by her convincing the driver to take her as far as the roads would allow. "Oh, let's just take a drive around the loop; I heard there were whales by City Park; I haven't been out to Pat's Lake in a while; I heard there were deer at Nemo..."

Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, Gunnar and Margaret Gunderson; children, Donald, Howell, Marsha and Joyce Lewis; and brother, Ole Martin.

She is survived by her siblings, Gilbert, Gunnar (Anne), Frank Gunderson (Karen), Chuck (Joan), Sandy, Roy (Pam), Bunny (Gene), Dinah, Syd, Patsy, and John Martin (Cindy) .; her children, Margaret "Jane" Bueing (Waldo), Georgia and Clinton Lewis; her grandchildren, Kimberly Lewis-Olds, Kyle Lewis (Dani), Kirsten Johnson (Chris), David 'Michael' Saunders Jr., Joseph Lewis (Chelsea), Ryan Saunders, Nicholas Lewis, Jenny Bueing, Shannon and Chris Booker. She is also survived by many great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the Presbyterian Church at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 18. A reception will be held immediately following the service at the American Legion.
