Wrangell has again followed an old established custom of giving more than was asked, according to G. J. Fabricius, chairman of the Red Cross Campaign Fund Drive in Wrangell. Contributions of Wrangell citizens to the Fund Campaign totaled $703.70, which is considerably above the quota set for Wrangell. It is expected that late contributions will swell the total to even more. No contributions are too late to be appreciated, Mr. Fabricius said. “I wish at this time to express my appreciation for the help rendered by Mr. Sharnbroich, former chairman, Mrs. Milles and the typing class, Mr. Lemke and the Boy Scouts, and the high school girls who prepared the poster,”Mr. Fabricius said, “they really did the work that usually falls on the chairman.”

The potential of tourism as a major industry in Southeast Alaska — and in Wrangell — will be the topic of a slidetalk presentation tonight at the Fireview Room of the Stikine Inn. The Chamber of Commerce-sponsored program beginning at 7:30 p.m. will be presented by the University of Alaska and by the state Travel Division. Chamber President Jerry Elliott said all Wrangell business operators and owners have been invited personally to the session, which also is open to the public. Ideas on development of tourism throughout Alaska and in Southeast will be presented, with an emphasis on what Wrangell can do to draw more out-of-town visitors.

The team for the April 14 Alaskans for Drug-Free Youth basketball game has been selected, and tickets are being sold for the event, which will put some Raiders football players on the court with local basketball talent. Coordinator for the event, Kris Timothy, said the team consists of veterans Fred Angerman and Todd White, three high school seniors, Jason Rathke, Kurt Young and Kim Timothy, the assistant girls basketball coach Christy Harris, and other brave new members Mike Barnes, Greg Roberts, Bart Churchill and Marty Massin. Keith Appleman will coach. The annual fundraiser helps raise money for the all-night graduation party, which costs around $4,000. The game will begin at 4 p.m. at the high school gym. Raiders team members will be available for autographs at halftime.
