Slow-pitch softball league opens to grown-ups

An adult slow-pitch softball league is in the works for this spring.

Kassee Schlotzhauer, manager at Wells Fargo, is organizing the teams.

She started a Facebook group, Wrangell Adult Softball, on March 15 and posted they have five teams in the making, at 10 people to a team. About 50 people expressed interest, she said March 18.

Schlotzhauer, who moved to Wrangell in 2014, played softball throughout high school in Cave Junction, a town in southern Oregon. Her dad played in a slow-pitch league in Stanislaus County, California.

“That was fun as a kid, watching all the adults play,” she said.

In Wrangell, there are not too many recreational activities aimed at adults, she said. “I thought it would be a good idea to bring it back, because (softball) has been here before. I thought, ‘Let’s give it a shot.’”

A schedule has yet to go out, but she anticipates practices starting in April. Games and practices will take place at the baseball field at Volunteer Park off Airport Road next to the elementary school.

“We’ll have two teams play per scheduled day. … We’d be scheduling (based) on whatever team works. One team might be busy,” she said. “It’s a trial year to see how it goes.”

Anyone interesting in playing and/or being a team captain can reach out to Schlotzhauer via phone call or text at 907-660-7481.
