Wrangell hosts high school cross-country meet on Saturday

The year’s only high school cross-country meet in town is set for Saturday, Sept. 9, with runners from nine Southeast schools scheduled to travel to Wrangell for the competition.

Starting time for the 10-team meet is 1 p.m., said Wrangell coach Mason Villarma. The public is welcome to watch the runners in the 5K race at the Muskeg Meadows Golf Course as long as they pay attention to the flags that direct spectators to stay off the racers route — which is mostly on the golf cart path, Villarma said.

The course will be closed to all golfers — disc golfers, too — and also recreational walkers until the cross-country meet is finished, estimated at about 2 p.m., at which time the golf will reopen for players, weather permitting.

Teams planning to make the trip include Metlakatla, Ketchikan, Klawock, Craig, Petersburg, Sitka, Juneau, Haines and Skagway, said Villarma, who expects about 15 “motivated” Wrangell runners to compete in the only meet of the season in their hometown.

The Wolves competed in the year’s first meet in Klawock last weekend, with competition scheduled for Sept. 16 in Sitka, Sept. 23 in Ketchikan, and the Southeast regional championship Sept. 30 in Juneau, according to the Wrangell School District calendar.

Though this Saturday’s run starts at 1 p.m., the high school girls volleyball team will be at the golf course starting at 11 a.m. to sell hamburgers as a fundraiser. The players are planning to sell lunches until 2 p.m.

Villarma said the cross-country team will get into the fundraising action too, with a cornhole tournament after the race. There will be a $20 entry fee for each contestant.
