School board seeks members for special budget committee

Prompted at a work session with the borough assembly last week to gather more public input into its long-term budget plans, the Wrangell School Board is seeking volunteers to serve on a special committee.

The school board announced March 28 that it is seeking letters of interest from people willing to serve on an ad hoc committee “to research long-term budgetary considerations,” such as a four-day school week, consolidation of the district’s three schools or other measures to cut expenses.

“This is your opportunity to be a part of what could lead to major changes in the future of Wrangell Public Schools.”

The district is looking for “open minds and the ability to weigh options,” said Schools Superintendent Bill Burr.

Anyone interested in volunteering should email a letter to Kimberly Powell of the district office at kpowell@wpsd.us no later than 4 p.m. Thursday, April 10. The school board will consider the nominees and appoint committee members at the April 14 board meeting.

The district’s plan is to assemble a nine-member committee, comprised of the school superintendent, a school principal, two school board members, a teacher from the elementary school and a teacher from the middle or high school, a non-teaching staff member, a parent of an elementary school student and a middle or high school parent.

The school district is facing a deep budget deficit, draining its reserves and pushing the district into considering significant cuts to spending. An increase in state aid to local schools would help fill the revenue hole but still would leave the district several hundred thousand dollars short of a balanced spending plan.
