High school graduation ceremony Friday evening

It happens every year, but that doesn't make it any less special. This year's graduation ceremony will start at 7 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the high school gym.

Though seating on the gym floor is reserved for graduates and their special guests, there should be plenty of bleacher seating available for anyone who wants to attend, said Kaelene Harrison, one of the organizers with the parents committee.

The 15 high school seniors selected Jennifer Ludwigsen, the mom of graduating senior Trevyn Gillen, as the commencement speaker.

Clara Waddington will share memories of her good friend Mara Heller, who died when a landslide tore through her family's home in November 2023. Her parents, sister and brother also died in the tragedy.

Heller was part of the class that is graduating this week.

Announcement of the class valedictorian was pending as of Monday morning, waiting for the tabulation of final grades. Daniel Harrison was named class salutatorian.

The evening will include a Wrangell tradition: a slide show of the students' earlier years. "The photos are up to the parents," Kaelene Harrison said, adding that it's the parents' decision how much they want to embarrass their kids.

Other graduation events this week will include the baccalaureate at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Harbor Light Church, she said. The non-denominational event will include remarks by pastors from several denominations.

The all-night party for graduates will start after the ceremony on Friday evening. The party will move around town, organized by parents and supported by donations of foods and gifts by multiple businesses, Harrison said.

Parents also organized multiple fundraising events over the past school year.
