Jamie Wollman, who served the past year as principal at Evergreen Elementary School, has resigned from the job.
Wollman last year replaced Ann Hillman, who had the position for two years before leaving to work as special education director for the school district in Tok, in Alaska’s Interior.
Wollman is leaving Wrangell for a job closer to her children, Schools Superintendent Bill Burr said May 23.
The Wrangell School Board received her resignation without comment at its meeting May 21.
Before taking the Wrangell job, she served as principal at the Hooper Bay Charter School in the western Alaska coastal community.
Burr said he is waiting for the new Wrangell schools superintendent to weigh in on the hiring decision for a principal. Burr is leaving the job at the end of June. The school board last week offered the superintendent position to its top applicant and is working to negotiate a contract to start by July 1.
“I was given the opportunity by the school board to be involved in hiring decisions coming in, and I would like to extend the same to the incoming one,” Burr explained of his decision to hold off on filling Wollman’s job.
“It is my recommendation that a principal for at least the 2025-2026 school year would be a value,” he said. “Some other possible solutions have been brought up and will involve further discussion,” adding that the district hopes to have the job notice posted or an alternate plan announced this week.
In addition to recruiting for a new elementary school principal, the district is advertising for a counselor for the 2025-2026 school year. Ann Hegney, who started work last September as the only counselor in the schools, has resigned. Hegney, who moved to Wrangell from New York state, said last month she is moving back East to help care for family.
Hegney was the district’s third counselor since 2021.
Greg Clark just finished his first year as principal at Wrangell’s middle and high schools, the fourth secondary schools principal in the past four years.
