Children and adults wander through the pumpkin patch Oct. 12 during the Chamber of Commerce event. Organizers said the event, planned to coincide with the borough's October tax-free day, was a success.

Spooks, vampires, and ponies descended on downtown Oct. 12 for the Wrangell Chamber of Commerce Pumpkin Patch.

Organizers said the event was a success. Activities included a cake walk, face painting, pony rides, and other family-focused activities.

Chamber officials estimated the attendance at about 140 people.

“We had about 200 pumpkins, and at the end of the day we had very few left,” said Cynthia Waddington. “It was a huge success.”

Organizers were grateful to all organizations and business that made contributions, Waddington said.

“I especially want to thank City Market and Bob’s,” she said. “They both pitched in a lot. City Market contributed the pumpkins and also made an additional contribution and helped us the whole morning.”

The event occurred on the second and final tax-free day of the year, which drove elevated participation.

“We did purposefully hold this on tax-free day,” Waddington said.

Chamber of Commerce officials plan to hold the event again next year, Waddington said.

“We were definitely giving this a trial run,” she said. “Down south this is very common for people. In Wrangell, we weren’t sure how people were going to respond.”

“We think it’ll be even better next year,” Waddington added.
