Group promotes awareness of child abuse

The Wrangell community group BRAVE, Building Respect and Valuing Everyone, is handing out materials at the elementary school and around town this week to increase awareness that April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

With support from the Alaska Children's Trust, a statewide organization that focuses on the well-being of children and families, BRAVE is distributing coloring books, growth charts, stickers, coffee sleeves, pinwheels and parental guides.

BRAVE was founded in 2017 with the mission statement: "To provide advocacy for healthy relationships in our community through prevention programs, resource referral and community engagement."

The Alaska Children's Trust explained this month's statewide campaign: "We are daring Alaskans to be the one who makes a difference in a child's life. We believe it takes a community to raise a child, and you don't have to be a parent to take steps to help keep children safe and healthy."

The trust is presenting online, parent-focused "opportunities to learn, connect and grow together,"April 13, 20 and 27, including virtual sessions on strengthening families and parental training.
