Early voting in state election open through Nov. 7 at City Hall

Wrangell registered voters have the option to cast their ballots early if they will be out of town on election day Nov. 8 or would prefer to get it out of the way in advance.

Early voting opened Monday and is available 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through Nov. 7 at City Hall.

The state is offering early voting sites in more than 150 communities across Alaska.

Election-day voting in Wrangell is set for 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Nolan Center.

Alaskans will be using the state’s new ranked-choice voting system, just as they did in the August special election to fill the remainder of the late U.S. Rep. Don Young’s unexpired term. Voters can rank candidates by choice, and if no candidate wins a majority of votes on the first count, voters’ second, third or fourth-choice rankings will determine the outcome of the election.

The Nov. 8 ballot also will include the question: Should Alaska convene a constitutional convention to rewrite the state’s founding principles? The constitution requires that Alaskans vote on the question every 10 years. A wide majority of voters have said no five times from 1972 to 2012.

The ballot will include races for U.S. Senate and U.S. House, governor, and just about the entire Legislature. Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly member Jeremy Bynum is challenging four-term incumbent Dan Ortiz for the state House seat in District 1, which includes Wrangell, Ketchikan, Metlakatla and Prince of Wales Island.
