Borough holds tourism meeting week before first cruise ship

The 459-foot-long, 530-passenger Roald Amundsen is scheduled to start Wrangell's cruise ship season on May 8.

To discuss plans for the season and share information, the borough's Economic Development Department has called a tourism stakeholder meeting for 9 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at the Nolan Center.

"This meeting is intended for businesses that operate within or provide services to the tourism industry. This includes tribal partners, agency partners, tour operators, accommodation providers, restaurants and other related businesses and organizations," the borough announced.

Staff from the departments of Economic Development, Parks and Recreation, Port and Harbors, Public Works, Public Safety and the Nolan Center will be at the meeting.

The agenda includes an update on the borough's downtown waterfront master plan, a review of transportation and staging logistics to accommodate cruise passengers, updates on amenities for visitors and the borough's marketing plans to promote tourism.

If all of the scheduled ships are full this summer, the town could see 42,000 passengers, almost double last year's total but short of Wrangell's record.

The assembly is scheduled to hold a work session on the waterfront master plan at 6 p.m. May 13 at City Hall.

The Economic Development Department, Wrangell Convention and Visitor Bureau and others have been working on a master plan to develop the downtown waterfront to attract and grow the tourism economy, balancing that with the community's needs and interests.
