The annual Stikine River Birding Festival returns for a weekend of avian adventures April 26-27.
Evolving from what was once known as the annual Garnet Festival in 1997, Birdfest will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, April 26, with people invited to bring their binoculars to a two-hour bird walk on the Muskeg Meadows Golf Course, led by local birding expert Bonnie Demerjian and wildlife expert and special guest speaker Chadd Drott.
Drott, a Colorado resident, has been studying wildlife for more than 25 years. He operates Chadd’s Walking With Wildlife, a tour company in Rocky Mountain National Park.
In addition to the bird walk, Drott will give a presentation on the four eagle species in Alaska, including the bald eagles found in the Wrangell area. The presentation is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Nolan Center, with a question-and-answer session included.
The doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with snacks by Sweet Tides Bakery at the event.
The Wrangell Community Market and its homemade crafts and foods is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26, with a birdfeeder-building session outside the Nolan Center from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, sponsored by Angerman’s.
On the golf course Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10 a.m., Wrangell and Petersburg golfers will compete in the annual two-day Ray Pedersen Memorial Ryder Cup tournament, playing 18 holes each day.
Registration will open at 9:30 a.m. Call 907-874-GOLF for more information.
A free showing of the animated adventure-comedy film “Zambezia” is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at the Nolan Center. The movie, at 82 minutes long, tells the story of a peregrine falcon who journeys to the bird city of Zambezia.
Bird artwork by Evergreen Elementary School students will be on display at the Nolan Center throughout the weekend.
During the week leading up to Birdfest, KSTK will run a “Name That Tweet” contest at 9:55 a.m. each morning, Monday through Friday, giving listeners the chance to identify the birdsong and win prizes.
