Governor Sean Parnell appointed Anchorage attorney Peter Maassen to the Alaska Supreme Court on Aug. 10. Maassen is the 22nd justice appointed to the Court, and he replaces Justice Morgan Christen, who was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. Jerry Dowd, 60, the president of Trident Seafoods, died of a heart attack on Aug. 6 in Igiugig. Dowd was on vacation at a sportsman’s lodge with members of his family during a fly fishing trip when he passed away. The attorney for six of the recalled Wrangell Medical Center Board of Directors has given a response to a lawsuit filed against them and former CEO Noel Rea by the City and Borough of Wrangell. The answer was filed in First District Court on Aug. 10. Alaska State fishery managers have determined that a mile-long oil sheen northwest of Sitka is from a fishing boat that sank earlier this month. The F/V Evening Star, a 50-foot seiner home-ported in Ilwaco, Wash., sank on Aug. 2 in nearly 60 feet of water during a fishing trip in Slocum Arm, which is about 40 miles northwest of Sitka.
