Lead by Jaime Roberts, members of the new Wrangell High School swim team and their families held their first meeting recently. This is the first time that the high school has ever had a swim team, to Roberts’ knowledge, and she said that this year the team was being funded by a “student support and academic enrichment” grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The Wrangell Cooperative Association recently received a $50,000 grant from SEARHC. The ongoing wildfire near Telegraph Creek, a small town on the Stikine River, has not yet been contained. Last weekend was the annual Rally For Cancer Care golf tournament, organized by the Wrangell Medical Center Foundation. The Wrangell School Board met last Friday for a short meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to accept the resignation of school board president Georgianna Buhler. JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) – The Alaska Supreme Court has ruled that some sex offenders convicted outside the state are not required to register in Alaska. The coho salmon derby kicks off this weekend, and runs every weekend until September . Anyone with a fishing rod is welcome to take part in the coho derby. August 8, 1918 Capt. A.B. Conover and James Wilson are in town this week from Glenora. They brought with them a nice collection of furs. Capt. Conover also brought with him the skin of the glacier bear killed by Arthur Bannon of Portsmouth, Ohio, two months ago. It will be shipped to Mr. Bannon together with the skull.
